Madrid, Sevilla 25 oct 2020.- Efeverde  ‘s director and EFE’s representative in the Management Committee of the European LifeWatercool project, Arturo Larena, has been included in the 2020 list of ‘The 100 most influential Latinos committed to climate action’ along with the Mexican Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or the former president of Bolivia, Carlos Mesa, among others.

Arturo Larena has participated in the design and implementation of the Life Watercool project, coordinated by Emasesa and together with Lourdes Uquilas and Mar Morales of EFEverde, coordinate the informative actions on the web and social networks of this information and communication initiative of the European Union, co-financed by the EU Life mechanism, on invasive alien species in aquatic environments.

“The 100 selected are recognized and committed personalities in their sector” who “through their work” promote global awareness of the climate emergency and the need for solutions “that help us live in balance with our planet,” explained Carlos Zegarra, executive director of Sachamama, the Miami-based environmental organization known for its work on climate change and climate and environmental communications in Latino communities.

The publication is being launched as part of the No Planet B Latino Summit, the “largest gathering of influential Latinos towards the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26),” aimed at empowering “Latino leadership in the fight against climate change,” as well as increasing “global pressure” to implement the Paris Agreement and the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.

From Nobel laureates to entertainers

The hundred or so names included in it are influential for “promoting the environmental struggle, sustainability and actions in the face of climate and environmental emergencies” and include Nobel laureates, high-profile politicians, academics, journalists, activists and artists from the world of entertainment in Spanish-speaking countries, selected “with the support of the main environmental organizations”.

Among them are UN Secretary General António Guterres of Portugal, Chile’s Minister of the Environment Carolina Schmidt, and American actors Jessica Alba and Joaquin Phoenix.

Only 15 Spaniards appear in this year’s list, including personalities who are regulars in this type of recognition such as the Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, the singer Alejandro Sanz or the actors Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz.

The list includes executives of well-known companies, high-profile politicians, academics, activists, journalists, Nobel Prize winners and stars of the show such as:

Marina Colorado- Environmental Reporter France 24
Carolina Schmidt – Minister of the Environment of Chile
Arturo Larena – Director of EFEVerde
Joaquin Phoenix – Actor and Activist
Sônia Guajajara – Indigenous and Environmental Activist
Antonio Luiz Seabra – Chairman of Natura

Larena highlights the importance of WaterCool

The director of Efeverde said he was “surprised and grateful” for its inclusion in this document which, he said, “should serve so that, between all of us, we can help to continue creating a well-informed citizenry in environmental matters”.

Larena stressed the importance of information on the climate emergency and ecological transition “at a time when disinformation is reborn in the face of the climate crisis and the goal of achieving an evolution towards a more just and decarbonized world”. In this sense, he highlighted the importance of adaptation projects such as LifeWaterool which, from Seville, will serve as a benchmark for other cities to address this problem.

EFEverde is the global multi-format platform for environmental information, integrated today in the EFE360 department of Agencia Efe, and channels all kinds of news related to climate crisis, biodiversity, sustainable development and circular economy, among other environmental issues. EFEverde.
