Seville City Council, through the coordinated action of Emasesa and the Macarena District, has begun the transplanting of 19 orange trees that were previously located in Calle Manuel Villalobos and which will become part of the shade in the playground of CEIP Arias Montano in anticipation of the start of the third phase of the works on Avenida de la Cruz Roja and the climate adaptation of the area within the framework of the European Union’s LifeWatercool project.<\/p>\n
This operation “responds to the demand of the educational community, which was responsible for the planting of these specimens on the perimeter of the school, and who demanded through their Ampa their recovery for the common areas of the centre, report from the City Council.<\/p>\n
The delegate Clara Mac\u00edas has highlighted the municipal response to the proposal of the Parents’ Association of the school which requested that these specimens, planted in their day by former students, will be incorporated into the provision of shade in the courtyard.<\/p>\n

The end of February has been chosen for the transplanting operation due to the better weather conditions, and heavy machinery is being used to open up holes a metre and a half cubic metres deep under the pavement to allow access to the roots of each of the specimens.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, the workers manually define and protect the roots, which are safeguarded together with the trunk by using materials that minimise risks and damage during transport.<\/p>\n
The trees are again moved by heavy machinery to the inside of the school playground, where the areas where each of the orange trees will be located have been defined. The special education students have also participated in the planting of the first one, who have made the first contributions of specially selected soil to encourage growth after its manual placement.<\/p>\n
The planting of these 19 orange trees is part of the preliminary work for the third phase of the pedestrianisation of Avenida de la Cruz Roja, which will begin shortly and will affect Manuel Villalobos streets while the first two phases, which are nearing completion, are progressing.<\/p>\n
The project for the complete urban transformation of Avenida de la Cruz Roja, which includes the streets Jorge Montemayor, Doctor Jim\u00e9nez D\u00edaz and Manuel Villalobos itself, includes the complete redevelopment, a pedestrianisation process, the reorganisation of mobility, the renovation of the sewerage and supply networks, and the implementation of innovative temperature reduction techniques that are part of a process of research into adaptation to climate change and compliance with the Sustainable Urban Development Goals.<\/p>\n
They are designed within the Life Watercool project, which has European funding through the Life programme, and defines up to four shaded and air-conditioned areas in the Macarena District through the implementation of a pilot research and innovation project that uses a process of cooling and storage of cold water to lower the temperature. These shaded areas will be located in the courtyard of the Arias Montano public school, in the square between Manuel Villalobos and Doctor Jim\u00e9nez D\u00edaz streets, in the children’s play area in Manuel Garrido square and in the bus shelters of the bus stops in Manuel Villalobos street.<\/p>\n
